Knee type vs bed type – CNC Machining center

Different types of bodies have a major impact on the advantages and disadvantages of machine tools. Destiny machine is dictated by the selected structure of the body. Below we present the most important pros and cons of different construction of CNC machining centers:

Knee type body construction

Knee type advantages:
– Lightweight body
– Light weight machine
– Smaller size machines
– The possibility of removing the working table and replace it on the rotary table or dividing heads

Knee type disadvantages:
– The entire weight of the working table and the workpiece submits screw (vertical axis), which is heavily loaded. To relieve the screw is used to support hydraulic lift but it complicates the construction of the machine
– less load the working table
– Smaller dimensions the working table
– Smaller size workpieces

Bed type body construction

Bed type advantages:
– Massive body
– better vibration damping
– Table carries heavy loads
– The possible large size of the working table
– You can process large and heavy details

Bed type disadvantages
– The table is fixed and can not be disassembled
– The equipment is set on the table, and not in place of the table
– High weight of the machine

Construction of bodies, and in fact the resulting advantages and disadvantages, determine the fate of individual machines. Machining centres with the knee type body will be suitable for small parts as they will be more flexible and versatile. Machining centers with the bed type body have a better supported position working table are therefore suitable for machining large and heavy workpieces.
